RARE - METROPOLE RECORD
label produced in Moscow about 1911. I've posted this on YouTube and that seems to be the only pre-WWI, pre-Russian Revolution Latvian music on this label. Probably more out there, just haven't found any.

RARE - STELLA KONCERT REKORD
label produced in Warsaw, Poland about 1913. This company was headquartered in Berlin. WWI effectively closed this record plant. I've posted this on YouTube and that seems to be the only pre-WWI, pre-Russian Revolution Latvian music on this label. Probably more out there, just haven't found any.

Apparently, these are quite rare. When they were produced, Latvia was a part of Russia. After the Russian Revolution, the Bolsheviks thought this type of music was too decadent so they gathered up all the old records and destroyed them. New records were produced more appropriate for the new ideology.

I suspect these records belonged to some Latvian folks who immigrated to the U.S. before the revolution and brought them with them. Amazing they have remained in such good condition.

Since I've posted these on YouTube, they seem to be all over the world, now. Seems they are newsworthy. There doesn't seem to be a lot of pre-WWI, pre-Russian Revolution Latvian music on 78 rpm records out there. There must be some somewhere, but as near as I can tell, they are each unique.

I found a web site that features pre-revolution Russian records (http://russian-records.com) and they were pretty excited about them. Their web site has only these 2 records in the Latvian library.

Anyway, here they are. If more are out there, I'd be happy to know.

The recordings are not enhanced, playing just as they came from the records. They are in good condition, as shown in the videos. The Metropole record is slightly warped, does not affect play. Each has significant original gloss and each retains high quality play surfaces.
